In our 30 years, we’ve hosted thousands of events that encourage connection, networking and vibrancy in communities. From ABBA Tribute bands to blue tree painting for mental health, community events aren’t just for the community, but our team get to have a lot of fun bringing them to life.
It would be impossible to document every event without writing a whole book, so we’ve broken it down to five of our favourites from 2022.
Ramped Up!
South Hedland
Creating Communities manages the Hedland Collective and this year, assisted in the Hedland Youth Advisory Stakeholder Group’s Ramped Up! Event which saw the JD Hardie Youth and Community Centre spruced up on a Saturday afternoon.
We know that a collective effort always achieves more than a solo mission and on this occasion, 14 organisations came together for the benefit of Hedland’s young people.
One thing we’ve noticed in our time is there’s nothing like bettering communities for the benefit of future generations that can bring people together.
Bradley Hall NAIDOC Week concert
Newman
Bradley Hall is a Nyiyaparli singer-songwriter who we have come to know well through our work together on the Newman Futures project.
The Newman Futures team pull together many activations each year, from community clean up days to daily activities at Train Park in the school holidays.
NAIDOC week saw the team work with a number of local service providers and the Bradley Hall Band to deliver an evening at Train Park full of music, dancing, play for the kids and a meal shared by the community. Events like this help provide regional communities with a place to connect and to learn about culture.
The Avenue Mothers Group
The Avenue, Armadale
The Avenue Mothers Group was started by Creating Communities consultants Pip Joyce and Jesika Miller, to give new parents on a new estate a place to meet other parents and form those vital social connections.
While this was one of our smaller events for the year, it’s impact was strong, as we saw tangible relationships formed between parents who had previously felt isolated in their new community and with the challenges that comes with early parenthood.
Lakelands Planting Day
Lakelands/Mandurah
This year saw the final Lakelands Planting Day with Peet Limited, after 13 years of hosting the event.
There’s something beautiful in knowing that someone will sit under the shade of trees that are planted today and that future generations will enjoy the plants, flowers or trees planted now for years to come.
This year was the program’s final year, not out of choice, but because there’s no more space on the estate to plant any more native shrubs. It’s a project we are really proud to have been involved in.
Beach Clean Up
We’re passionate about ensuring communities are connected by a common cause, whether that be young peoples interests, helping young parents or health and wellbeing, many of our events are centred around empowering community members to create healthy, vibrant communities.
Part of that is ensuring communities are helping the planet, which is why one of our favourite events this year was led by Creating Communities consultant Ross Robins, with a World Ocean’s Day beach clean-up at Shorehaven. The community really rallied around this event, pitching in to clean up the local beach.
